The government of Assam has given a significant boost to wildlife crime investigations by officially recognising North East India's sole Wildlife Genetics Laboratory (WGL). This decision allows the laboratory, managed by biodiversity organisation Aaranyak, to employ DNA sampling methods as forensic evidence in such cases.

The recognition comes under Section 329 (4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya confirmed. Following the governor's order on August 4, the Special Chief Secretary of the Assam Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department issued a notification affirming the laboratory's role.

The lab, established in 2008, is touted as Northeast India's only conservation genetics and wildlife DNA forensics facility. It has significantly contributed to over 135 wildlife crime investigations in collaboration with government authorities and conducted over two dozen conservation genetic research projects on endangered species.
