In a promising development, U.S. traffic fatalities have decreased by 8.2% in the first half of the year, according to officials.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that vehicle crashes resulted in 17,140 deaths through June 30, a decline from 18,680 in the same period in 2024.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, road deaths surged and remained high for several years. This year's decline marks the lowest fatality rate in six months since 2014.
