On Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made an urgent visit to Kalaban village in Poonch district, assessing the significant damage caused by recent land subsidence events in the border region.
Kalaban, located in Mendhar tehsil near the Line of Control, has been suffering from land subsidence since September 11, severely affecting over 1,000 residents and damaging more than 95 houses, a graveyard, and a mosque. The affected residents have been moved to safer areas.
During his visit, Chief Minister Abdullah surveyed the destruction by helicopter, inspecting several areas where infrastructure suffered severe damage. He was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Ashok Sharma and Minister Javaid Rana, the local MLA. Abdullah met with residents, heard their concerns, and pledged full governmental assistance. Furthermore, he instructed officials to provide all necessary living amenities. Kalaban is just one of 11 villages afflicted by subsidence across several districts following the monsoon season, leading to the displacement of over 3,000 individuals.
