Istanbul Shakes: 5.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes, Residents on Alert
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, causing alarm but no immediate damage. The epicenter was in the Marmara Sea, near Marmaraereglisi. The event follows historical tremors, including a deadly 7.8-magnitude quake in February 2023. Authorities are inspecting affected areas for potential issues.

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul, Turkey's largest urban hub, on Thursday, as shaking buildings prompted some residents to flee into the streets. The tremor was felt across the city, according to witnesses and the AFAD disaster and emergency authority.
Despite the magnitude, the Istanbul Governor's office reported no immediate serious damage. Authorities say the quake's epicenter was located in the Marmara Sea, close to the town of Marmaraereglisi, on a known geological faultline.
Historically, Istanbul has endured significant earthquakes, including a catastrophic 7.8-magnitude event in February 2023 that resulted in over 55,000 fatalities in Turkey and Syria. Ongoing inspections are underway to assess the current quake's impact.
