Record Meltdown: Swiss Glaciers Facing Dramatic Ice Loss

Switzerland's glaciers experienced their fourth-largest ice volume loss on record over the past year. Sparse snowfall during winter and heatwaves in June contributed to a 3% reduction of total ice mass, as reported by GLAMOS and the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation.

Switzerland's glaciers are rapidly shrinking, marking their fourth-largest reduction in ice on record according to a new report.

The monitoring body GLAMOS, in collaboration with the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation, revealed that the past 12 months saw a considerable ice volume decrease.

A combination of scant snowfall, particularly in the northeastern Swiss Alps, and June heatwaves prompted a 3% loss in total ice mass, underscoring urgent concerns about climate change impacts on alpine environments.
