In a disturbing case of wildlife cruelty, two men from Birthi village have been booked following a video that showed them chasing a porcupine to its death. The footage went viral on social media, prompting action from forest department officials.
The Pithoragarh forest division initiated proceedings against the accused, identified as Veeru and Govind, after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) flagged the video as an incident of severe animal cruelty. According to Divisional Forest Officer Aashutosh Singh, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against the duo.
The department is treating the case as an act of extreme cruelty against a rare and endangered species, with legal proceedings pending a comprehensive investigation. Singh emphasized that appropriate legal sections will be invoked once the investigation is finalized.
