Standoff at Zaporizhzhia: Drone Strike Intensifies Nuclear Fears
A Ukrainian drone struck the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant controlled by Russia, causing concern but no damage to key equipment. The incident highlights ongoing tensions and fears of a potential nuclear accident as the plant remains on the frontline of conflict in southeastern Ukraine.
A Ukrainian drone hit the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant on Saturday, according to Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear energy company. The attack, targeting Europe's largest nuclear facility, perforated a turbine hall wall but left critical equipment unscathed.
Rosatom's head, Alexei Likhachev, described the drone as 'a kamikaze assault' on the turbine hall of Power Unit No. 6, resulting in detonation. He emphasized the incident was 'deliberate' and urgent.
The Zaporizhzhia plant has been under Russian control since March 2022, amid concerns of a potential nuclear accident as it remains near the conflict's frontline. Likhachev warned of far-reaching consequences for those currently feeling secure beyond the borders of Russia and Ukraine.
