In the wake of a price surge in chemical fertilizers exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions, Senegalese farmers are pivoting towards organic alternatives. The conflict that began in Iran has disrupted global supply chains, driving prices up by 40% and prompting farmers like Abou Sow to explore sustainable solutions.

Having switched to organic methods eight years ago, Sow promotes the use of local manure and compost in Senegal, advising fellow farmers on creating nutrient-rich compost. The Senegalese government has also stepped in, announcing plans to subsidize and distribute organic fertilizers to combat the crisis.

The international supply chain disruptions have compounded the existing challenges, compelling farmers to seek new methods of sustaining their yields. Sow's community is strategically positioned near towns with ample manure supply, but in more remote areas, transporting these natural fertilizers remains an obstacle.

As an alternative, the biofertilizer industry offers products that enhance nutrient absorption and support sustainable growth. However, reliance on chemical fertilizers remains after decades of prevalence, posing significant challenges for a widespread shift to organic strategies.
