Fabio Fognini, who once ranked world number nine, has announced that the upcoming Italian Open in Rome will be his last ATP Masters 1000 appearance. The 37-year-old Italian player is set to face Briton Jacob Fearnley in the first round, marking his 18th participation in the main draw.
Fognini reflected on his decision, stating, "I think it's a good time to say goodbye in this beautiful city, special city." He reminisced about dreaming of playing in the Italian Open since childhood and now stands at the other end of his illustrious career.
Known for his prowess on clay, Fognini has captured eight of his nine ATP singles titles on this surface, including a memorable victory at the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters. One of his cherished memories in Rome was defeating then-world number one Andy Murray in 2017.
