Rohit Sharma's decision to retire from Test cricket, announced just before the five-match series against England, was entirely his own, according to BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla. Rohit revealed his retirement plans on Wednesday, a move free from external pressure.

While Sharma's legacy as a white-ball maestro remains unchallenged, his contribution in Test cricket over 67 matches will be remembered as substantial, though not as prolific. Shukla praised his impact, noting that while Rohit retires from Tests, he will continue participating in ODIs.

The Indian Test captaincy, vacated by Sharma, now opens up for new leadership, with Jasprit Bumrah, K L Rahul, and Shubman Gill being top contenders. However, Shukla emphasized that the final decision rests with the selection panel, advising against speculation.
