Girona's head coach, Míchel Sánchez, has been admitted to the hospital for unspecified medical reasons, according to a statement released on Friday. The development adds a layer of uncertainty as the team continues its battle to avoid relegation.
In a post on X, Míchel confirmed that he would remain hospitalized and under medical supervision for several days. Thus, he won't be able to oversee Girona's home game against Villarreal this Saturday. With just four games remaining, Girona currently sits six points clear of the drop zone, occupying the 15th spot.
While neither Míchel nor the club has divulged specifics regarding his condition, the coach expressed confidence in his swift return. 'I feel fine under medical observation, and I am counting the days before I can get back to work and keep fighting until the end of the season,' he said. Last season, Míchel led Girona to a historic third-place finish, but the team has struggled this season after losing key players.
