In what promises to be a gripping showdown, England's Test captain Ben Stokes chose to bowl after winning the toss against India in the opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley. This marks a new chapter for India, playing without stalwarts Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. At the helm, Shubman Gill captains the Test side for the first time, eyeing a series victory in England—a feat not achieved by India since 2007.

Under the leadership of head coach Brendon McCullum and Stokes, England has become a formidable opponent, boasting an undefeated home record since McCullum's appointment in 2022. For the tourists, Sai Sudharsan debuts as India's Test cap number 317. The 23-year-old left-hander received his first cap from celebrated cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara. Additionally, Karun Nair, once a forgotten cricketer, returns to the national squad after eight years.

In a tactical move, India fielded experienced all-rounder Shardul Thakur over the younger Nitish Kumar Reddy, appointing him the fourth pace bowler. The pace battery, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna, hopes to challenge the English batsmen. Spin and batting depth come from Ravindra Jadeja. Ben Stokes remarked on winning the toss, highlighting the conditions at Headingley, while Shubman Gill noted India's readiness and their expectation of a good batting surface later in the day.
