South Africa's cricket team faces a leadership change as Temba Bavuma, their ICC World Championship 2025 title-winning captain, is sidelined due to a left hamstring strain. The International Cricket Council (ICC) reports that veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj will step in to lead the Proteas in the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe.

Bavuma sustained the injury during the World Test Championship Final at Lord's, continuing to bat despite the pain. His tenacity shone through with a crucial half-century, forming a match-winning partnership with Aiden Markram. The extent of Bavuma's injury remains uncertain as further scans are awaited, while Maharaj captains a squad featuring five uncapped players.

This setback marks Bavuma's third hamstring injury in two years, adding to his history of elbow issues. Previously, he played through pain during the 2023 ODI World Cup and suffered another injury against India. The Proteas, having triumphed over Australia in the Ultimate Test, are set to face Zimbabwe starting June 28 at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Looking ahead, South Africa will gear up for ODI series against Australia in August and England in September.
