Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill is poised to etch his name in history by surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's over 50-year-old record for most runs by an Indian batsman in a bilateral series. The deciding Test match against England is set to take place at The Oval on August 31.

With England leading the series 2-1, India has an opportunity to level the scores, a feat last achieved in England back in 2007. In the previous Test at Manchester's Old Trafford, Gill managed just 12 runs in the first innings but showcased his tenacity with a crucial 103-run knock in the second, turning a 311-run shortfall into a 114-run lead and securing a series-saving draw for India.

Gill is currently the top scorer in the series with 722 runs at an average of 90.25, boasting four centuries in eight innings and a high score of 269. Sunil Gavaskar holds the standing record with 774 runs from the 1971 series against the West Indies. Gill needs only 53 more runs to surpass this monumental achievement and 89 runs to break Don Bradman's record for most runs by a captain in a Test series. (ANI)
