The 2023 Ryder Cup saw Europe triumph 15-13 amid taunts. Fitzpatrick noted bitterness and shared apologies from American friends over the fans' conduct.

Matt Fitzpatrick took strong exception to remarks made by PGA of America President Don Rea, criticizing his defense of U.S. fans during the 2023 Ryder Cup as offensive to European supporters. Rea had likened the hostile New York atmosphere to that in Rome, which did not sit well with Fitzpatrick.
In New York, Europe secured a 15-13 victory over the United States amid a backdrop of taunts and unruly fan behavior. Notably, a master of ceremonies stepped down after participating in a vulgar chant against Rory McIlroy. Additionally, McIlroy's wife was targeted when a beer was thrown in her direction.
Fitzpatrick expressed disapproval of Rea's comments, considering them dismissive. Leading into the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Fitzpatrick remarked that there was evident bitterness during the trophy presentation and shared that he had received numerous apologies from American friends concerning the fan conduct.
