In a strategic move, West Indies captain Roston Chase opted to bat first after winning the toss in the inaugural Test of a two-match series against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This series forms part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Notably, this is India's first Test series within this cycle.

At the toss, Chase expressed confidence in his team's ability to handle initial challenges, citing potential moisture on the pitch as a factor for a cautious start. In a testament to their strategy, West Indies fielded two seamers, two spinners, and an all-rounder to counter India's home advantage.

Commenting on the decision to bowl first, Indian captain Shubman Gill noted his team's aspirations to win all four home Tests scheduled before year-end. Despite losing the toss, Gill highlighted India's preparedness, boasting a balanced squad comprising two seamers and three spinners, ready to adapt to the pitch conditions.
