Defending champion Coco Gauff advanced to the semifinals of the China Open for the third consecutive year, after overcoming Germany's Eva Lys with a score of 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday.
The second-seeded American faced difficulties on her serve, conceding seven break-point opportunities in Beijing; however, Lys was able to convert only three of them. Meanwhile, Gauff succeeded in breaking Lys's serve five times in the matchup.
Gauff, seeking her 11th career title, remarked on her strategy, emphasizing confidence and aggression while on court. Her next opponent will be determined following the quarterfinal match between third-seeded Amanda Anisimova and Italy's Jasmine Paolini.
