India Unveils World Yogasana Championship: A New Era in Global Sporting
The inaugural World Yogasana Championship 2026, the first global event focusing on Yogasana as a competitive sport, was unveiled in New Delhi. Scheduled for June 2026 in Ahmedabad, it aims to establish Yogasana as a globally recognized sport, supported by national and international collaborations, aspiring for Olympic inclusion.
In a landmark event for Indian sports, the inaugural edition of the World Yogasana Championship (WYC) 2026 was officially unveiled in New Delhi. Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, announced this first-ever global championship dedicated to Yogasana, highlighted by the presence of federation leaders and dignitaries.
Slated to take place from June 4 to June 8, 2026, at Eka Arena in Ahmedabad, the WYC will host elite Yogasana athletes and delegations from over 60 countries. This championship aims to position Yogasana as a recognized sporting discipline internationally, with hopes of paving the way for Olympic recognition.
The launch event introduced the championship's logo, trophy, official jersey, and the lion mascot, Veer. Supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and various agencies, this initiative reflects India's effort to showcase Yogasana as a modern sport that ties athletic prowess and India's rich heritage.
Minister Mandaviya emphasized India's leadership in gifting yoga to the world and stressed the country's commitment to advancing Yogasana as a competitive sport on a global scale. Officials expressed immense enthusiasm for the event, which they envision as a gateway to a new Yogasana sporting economy.
The World Yogasana Championship will feature events like Traditional Yogasana, Artistic Yogasana, and Team Events, judged by international standards. As it aims for inclusion in major multi-sport events, the championship stands as a testament to India's ancient wisdom, poised to captivate the modern sporting world.
