TRAI Distinguishes Satcom Services from Terrestrial Mobile

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday made it clear that satellite communication (satcom) services are not in direct competition with terrestrial mobile services. The regulator cited significant disparities in their network capacities and operational scales to underscore this point.
TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti stated clearly during a briefing that the two types of services are complementary rather than competitive. He addressed concerns regarding whether the regulator's recommendation on satcom spectrum would affect terrestrial service providers.
Lahoti explained there would be no negative impact on terrestrial telcos due to these recommendations. Notably, the TRAI suggested that satcom companies like Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, should pay 4% of their adjusted gross revenue as spectrum charges, a rate higher than what satcom firms have been advocating for.
