AI System Set to Safeguard Elephants on Railway Tracks
South Eastern Railway's Chakradharpur Division plans to implement an AI-powered Elephant Intrusion Detection System (EIDS) to prevent train accidents involving elephants. The system detects approaching elephants from 200 meters and alerts officials to take necessary actions, aiming to enhance both wildlife protection and rail transport efficiency.

In a bid to safeguard elephants from train accidents, the South Eastern Railway's Chakradharpur Division is gearing up to roll out an Artificial Intelligence-based Elephant Intrusion Detection System (EIDS).
The system has undergone testing on the Barabamboo-Chakradharpur-Lotapahar section and is designed to detect elephants from a 200-meter distance. Upon detection, it sends alert signals to officials, prompting trains to slow down or halt to avert potential disasters. During testing, two elephants were strategically placed to measure the system's effectiveness.
By integrating pressure wave sensors, optical fibre cables, and AI algorithms, this Rs 15 crore project aims to increase rail transport efficiency while prioritizing elephant safety. It is expected to improve speeds on elephant corridors, boosting the mobility of trains over NF Railways.
