In a landmark move, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has emerged victorious in the bid to privately manufacture India's Small Satellite Launch Vehicles (SSLV), according to the country's space regulatory body.

The deal, valued at 5.11 billion rupees ($59 million), represents the Indian government's most substantial step to date in opening the burgeoning space industry to private enterprises. The consortium, which includes well-known entities such as Alpha Design Technologies, Adani Defence Systems and Technologies, and Bharat Dynamics, emphasizes HAL's capacity to independently create, manage, and commercialize SSLV launches.

This initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policy to foster privatization within India's space sector. The global low Earth orbit launch vehicle market is projected to surge to $44 billion by 2032, and India's space industry is aiming to expand its share to $44 billion by the decade's end.
