Top male tennis players have been shielded from over 162,000 instances of severe social media abuse in the inaugural year of the AI-driven ATP Safe Sport initiative, the sport's governing body announced on Thursday. This endeavor marks a significant step in addressing online harassment of athletes.

The initiative, targeting 245 players so far, detected and concealed abusive messages in real-time by scrutinizing more than 3.1 million comments since its launch in July 2024. "Safe Sport fosters a healthier online space, eliminating hateful commentary," remarked Dusan Lajovic, a member of the ATP Player Advisory Council.

Online harassment, often from disgruntled gamblers, remains a significant issue for athletes, including women like Elina Svitolina who faced threats following a match against Naomi Osaka. The project's success over the past year highlights the importance of safeguarding athletes' online environments.
