IIT-Madras Lab Pioneers 5G Testing Certification
The Telecom Security Testing Lab at IIT-Madras has become the first in India to receive certification for testing 5G network functions and devices, marking a significant step in securing and advancing India's telecom infrastructure. The Telecom Security Testing Lab (TSTL) at IIT-Madras has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first laboratory in India to receive certification for testing 5G core-network functions. The authorisation comes from the Department of Telecommunications, empowering the lab to assess 5G mobile-telecom equipment's security and resilience.
This certification from the National Centre for Communication Security (NCSS) allows TSTL to test Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) and 5G Group-I devices, covering 21 critical core-network functions. The lab's efforts will aid in the swift deployment of secure 5G infrastructure throughout the country.
The strategic importance of this achievement was highlighted by IITM Director V Kamakoti, who emphasized how the certification reduces reliance on foreign labs and promotes indigenous technological advances. CEO MJ Shankar Raman noted the lab's role in validating India's capabilities in secure telecom infrastructure, further enhancing collaborative research and development in the sector.
