The Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur has unveiled the Vikram Sodhi Centre of Excellence, a landmark initiative in AI-enabled geological and mining systems. The centre aims to drive forward data-driven innovations within the mining industry.
Funded with Rs 15 crore over five years by Vikram Sodhi, Vice Chairman of Mineros SA, the centre seeks to develop tailored AI systems for Indian geological conditions. This initiative responds to earlier efforts where digital tools were scattered, limiting comprehensive sector transformation.
Integrating exploration, planning, operation, and environmental management, the centre will work on industry-linked programs using real-world data. It represents a significant enhancement of IIT-Kharagpur's interdisciplinary research capabilities, according to Director Prof Suman Chakraborty.
