In a development that underscores escalating tensions in Eastern Europe, Romania's defence ministry reported the recovery of drone debris in Galati following an overnight Russian assault on Ukraine. The incident resulted in property damage but no casualties. The fragments, potentially explosive, led to an area evacuation.
Romania, a NATO member, shares a 650-km border with Ukraine and has frequently witnessed Russian drones intruding its airspace. However, Saturday's event marked the first instance of property damage, heightening regional security concerns. The Romanian defence ministry condemned Russia's actions, citing a disregard for international law and a threat to regional stability.
In response to these security breaches, Romania plans to deploy the Merops counter-drone system, developed by Project Eagle. This U.S.-made, AI-powered system aims to enhance Romania's air defense capabilities, mirroring measures taken by Poland on NATO's eastern front. The system integrates soon after final testing, enhancing readiness against drone threats.
