The Department of Telecommunications has announced a suite of reforms designed to make public Wi-Fi access more convenient and widespread across India. Implemented under the PM-WANI (Prime Minister's Wi-Fi Access Network Interface) framework, these changes are focused on simplifying digital connectivity for citizens.

Key reforms include the introduction of QR code-based authentication for connecting laptops and secondary devices, as well as the availability of flexible, short-duration Wi-Fi plans. Hotspot names have also been standardized for better user identification and reliability. These initiatives are expected to be fully operational by July 2026, following directives issued to all PM-WANI stakeholders.

The measure aims to support India's Digital India initiative by improving digital public infrastructure. According to Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, the platform is becoming easier to use with new features like QR-based logins and affordable short-duration internet plans. Such reforms are seen as crucial steps in enhancing public Wi-Fi usability and ensuring equitable digital access nationwide.
