The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has hailed the new free trade agreement (FTA) with the UK as a transformative deal for India's ready-made garment industry. According to AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhri, the agreement will enable India to double its garment exports to Britain within three years by removing a hefty 9.6% tariff barrier.
The backdrop of the global trade landscape is characterized by uncertainty, owing to events such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and American reciprocal tariffs. However, Sekhri believes that the FTA levels the playing field for Indian garments, making them competitive against top suppliers such as China, Bangladesh, and Turkey.
AEPC expects the agreement to not only attract investment but also unlock new export opportunities and reduce trade barriers, ultimately empowering Indian weavers and manufacturers. The Vice Chairman, A Sakthivel, emphasizes that this deal paves the way for long-term growth and will foster a more favorable business environment for the textile industry in both countries.
