Thousands of commuters faced significant inconvenience on Friday morning as the Central Railway suspended its local train services between Thane and Vashi. The disruption was caused by a girder, launched for a bridge under construction, that was found to be tilted.
With all suburban services on the Thane to Navi Mumbai route suddenly halted, commuters were left scrambling for alternative transportation options, including buses and autos, to reach their workplaces. For a city where suburban trains are crucial, this abrupt suspension was a severe setback.
A railway spokesperson indicated that the disruption stemmed from the launch of 10 girders by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority for the new Airpoli-Katai Naka link road. The issue with the tilted girder was identified shortly after its launch, prompting the suspension of services for safety reasons. Restoration work began at 8:15 a.m., with expectations of completion within half an hour.
