A migrant shipwreck near Italy's Lampedusa Island resulted in one confirmed death, fears of two more missing, and 87 people rescued, a U.N. migration agency official reported on Monday.
The rescue operation began with a Tunisian fishing boat spotting the migrants and continued with the Italian coastguard's intervention. The migrants embarked from Tunisia on a fragile metal boat that fell apart during the journey, described as 'floating coffins' by the International Organization for Migration's spokesperson Flavio Di Giacomo.
Despite perilous weather conditions, another group of 80 migrants, including children and pregnant women, safely reached Lampedusa. The IOM disclosed that over 25,000 migrants have perished or vanished on the central Mediterranean sea route since 2014, highlighting the persistent dangers of this pathway.
