India has intensified its stance on agricultural issues as crucial trade negotiations with the United States progress in Washington, an official revealed on Monday.

Headed by commerce special secretary Rajesh Agrawal, the Indian delegation is expected to prolong its stay in Washington to finalize an interim trade agreement. The urgency stems from the looming July 9 deadline that could see the reinstatement of a 26 percent reciprocal tariff if negotiations fail.

The talks, which began on June 26, were initially scheduled over two days but have already been extended to June 30 and may extend further. Both countries are striving to reach an agreement to avoid the additional tariffs, while seeking concessions across agriculture, industrial goods, and more.
