The Kochi Water Metro has reached an impressive 50 lakh passengers within just 29 months of its inception, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The milestone was achieved on Saturday afternoon when an Australia-based Malayali couple, Naina and Amal, booked tickets from the High Court terminal to Fort Kochi. Kochi Metro's Managing Director, Loknath Behera, marked the occasion by presenting a gift to Naina, the 50 lakhth passenger.
Despite its limited route network, the Water Metro's high-quality service drew praise and popularity among the locals and tourists since its launch on April 25, 2023. Internationally renowned institutions and 21 other locations in India have shown interest, with the World Bank signaling its intent to partner with the project.
The operational success of the Water Metro is highlighted by a steady increase in passenger count, with specific milestones achieved at regular intervals since its launch.
