In a landmark event, Kashmir Valley received its first automobile train from the Jammu Division of Northern Railway, officials confirmed on Friday. The train, comprising 116 vehicles manufactured at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant, reached Anantnag Goods Shed in south Kashmir, marking a pivotal shift in regional logistics.
This development signals an end to the challenges faced with road transport of vehicles from Jammu, particularly during harsh winters when the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway's closure was frequent. The introduction of rail transport means vehicles can now be transported directly, bypassing the arduous 300-km highway journey.
Maruti Suzuki India became the first automobile manufacturer in the country to use Indian Railways for vehicle dispatch to the region. This aligns with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, utilizing in-plant railway sidings for efficient vehicle movement. This initiative is expected to significantly ease vehicle access and availability in Kashmir Valley.
