The death toll from the catastrophic explosion at Vedanta's power plant in Chhattisgarh's Sakti district has climbed to 21, following the death of a critically injured worker, Kismat Ali, on Thursday night, officials have confirmed. The blast, which occurred at Singhitarai village's power facility on April 14, involved a steel tube carrying high-pressure steam from the boiler to the turbine.
As investigations unfold, authorities reported that a preliminary probe points to excessive fuel accumulation inside the boiler furnace, escalating pressure and causing the explosion. This incident adds to the alarming industrial safety concerns prevalent in the state, with approximately 300 fatalities in the past 2.5 years.
In response, leaders demand stricter legal repercussions, with Congress MLA Charan Das Mahant advocating for culpable homicide charges. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai vowed rigorous action against the responsible parties. Meanwhile, criticisms intensify as the probe widens, scrutinizing alleged managerial negligence, especially regarding the use of substandard materials.
