India and EAEU Explore Temporary Trade Agreement

India and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are negotiating a provisional trade agreement aimed at specific product groups. The talks, part of ongoing efforts toward a full free trade agreement, were described by Russia's Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov as "complex" due to India's ambitious demands.

Reshetnikov emphasized the intricate nature of mutual economic interests. He remarked on the size and complexity of India's economy, indicating that the discussions require careful navigation. The comments followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's note of progress in trade liberalization talks with India at the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting in Kazakhstan.

Putin highlighted previous successful trade agreements with Mongolia, the UAE, and Indonesia, citing these as precedents for expanding trade ties. The EAEU, an economic bloc including Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia, promotes integration and market access across its members. The ongoing India-EAEU trade discussions have accelerated following a formal framework established in August 2025.
