Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has directed forest officials to assess and prune the branches of hazardous trees during the monsoon season to prevent accidents and protect lives and property.
Speaking at a tree protection campaign launch, he lamented the loss of 29-year-old Akshay, who died when a tree branch fell on him recently. Khandre highlighted reports from experts indicating that tall, shallow-rooted trees frequently collapse in strong winds and rains due to the surrounding concrete, stone slabs, and tiles, which block water absorption. The National Green Tribunal has addressed this issue, and the state has issued corresponding orders.
Khandre pointed out that BBMP Special Commissioner has mandated the removal of concrete from tree bases and advocated for a one-meter soil radius for new roadside plantings. He urged the BBMP, local city bodies, the Highway Authority, the Horticulture Department, and the Social Forestry Division of the Forest Department to eliminate concrete barriers around existing trees. He called for regular Tree Authority meetings to identify and address hazardous trees urgently.
