Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis revealed on Wednesday that Vantara would support the state's Supreme Court petition to secure the return of elephant Madhuri to a monastery in Kolhapur. Madhuri, a 36-year-old tusker, was recently relocated to Vantara's facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat, after a court ruling favoring her rehabilitation there due to health concerns.
The decision, originally upheld by the Supreme Court, sparked public outcry with thousands participating in a 'silent march' in Kolhapur, demanding the elephant's return. Despite being the court-appointed recipient, Vantara clarified they did not initiate the relocation and are supportive of efforts to reunite Madhuri with her previous caretakers.
In discussions with the chief minister, Vantara expressed no intention to retain custody of Madhuri and showed their willingness to collaborate on establishing a rehabilitation center in Kolhapur, respecting the community's religious sentiments while following legal protocols.
