The Supreme Court will deliberate on a plea contesting the Karnataka High Court's revocation of a media gag over the Dharmasthala mass burial case on Friday. This follows the high court's August ruling against an earlier order from a Bengaluru court that had restrained coverage of the contentious issue.
An advocate, citing thousands of YouTube channels purportedly sharing defamatory materials about the Dharmasthala temple, presented the plea before Chief Justice B R Gavai. The move seeks an urgent hearing concerning alleged defamatory content aimed at the family managing the temple.
The gag order, initially put in place after reports of alleged female murders in Dharmasthala, called for the removal of vast online content. Despite earlier resistance, the plea now seeks Supreme Court intervention, amid a special investigation by the state into the grave allegations.
