Guardians on Four Legs: Military's Animal Allies in Action

The Indian military currently houses nearly 12,600 animals, including horses, mules, camels, and dogs, as revealed by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth to Parliament. The animals play crucial roles in military operations and are supported by detailed policies for their welfare.

Minister Seth assured the Rajya Sabha that the animals' health is diligently monitored by military veterinarians and trained staff, with a focus on both in-service management and post-retirement care. The animals are granted scientifically designed rations and undergo periodic health screenings.

The Defence Ministry collaborates with highly reputed government organisations for ongoing research aimed at enhancing the well-being of these military animals. This initiative underscores the Army's commitment to maintaining optimal health and capabilities of their animal allies.
