Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, the esteemed Hindustani classical vocalist, passed away early Thursday morning at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness. His daughter, Namrata Mishra, confirmed that he breathed his last around 4 am in Mirzapur, where he resided with his youngest daughter's family.
The acclaimed musician's health worsened late Wednesday night, and he was taken to the hospital. Despite receiving treatment, he succumbed to his ailments. His contributions to Indian arts, particularly in Khayal, Thumri, and Dadra styles, are widely celebrated. His notable accolades include the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan honors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and praised Mishra for his profound influence on Indian music. Born in Azamgarh in 1936, Mishra's musical journey began under the guidance of his father and other luminaries. His final rites will take place in Varanasi, attended by family and admirers.
