Tamil Nadu has marked a historic achievement in marine conservation with the highest release of Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings this season. An unprecedented 2,29,432 hatchlings have made their journey to the sea, reflecting a striking nearly fourfold increase since 2019-2020, when only 25,551 were released.
Supriya Sahu, Tamil Nadu's Additional Chief Secretary of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, attributes this success to strategic groundwork, effective interventions, and collaborations with coastal communities. Speaking to ANI, she stated, "The rise in hatchlings indicates successful turtle management and enhanced coastal protection, thanks to coordinated conservation efforts."
Data reveals consistent gains, with 60,789 hatchlings recorded in 2019-20, rising to 215,778 in 2023-24. The ongoing season has witnessed 249,745 hatchlings released by May 6, pointing to sustained growth. Efforts in areas like Cuddalore and Chennai have been pivotal, with robust nesting and hatching numbers supported by improved hatchery infrastructure and vigilant patrolling.
