Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized on Thursday the pressing need for Indian agriculture to achieve economic viability as a cornerstone for making the country self-reliant or 'Atmanirbhar.'

Speaking at an event, Gadkari highlighted the necessity of diversifying India's agriculture towards the energy sector due to the lack of adequate foodgrain storage capacity in the country.

He also stressed the importance of boosting employment opportunities in rural and tribal regions, addressing the current economic difficulties these areas face. Gadkari noted the surplus of foodgrains as a significant challenge, urging the creation of markets for biofuels to both improve farmers' income and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, which can contribute to pollution.
