The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has launched an investigation following alarming media reports of a deadly incident at a pharmaceutical company's effluent treatment unit in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh. The tragedy unfolded during a night shift on June 11, 2025, claiming two lives and critically injuring another due to toxic gas exposure.
Amid concerns of potential human rights violations, the NHRC has served notices to the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and Anakapalli's Superintendent of Police. The Commission demands a thorough report within two weeks, detailing the condition of the surviving worker and any compensatory measures taken for him and the deceased workers' families.
In a separate statement, officials confirmed the occurrence at Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City, where the gas leak proved fatal for two employees. The leak was attributed to a valve operation near a tank. The victims' bodies were sent to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam for further examination. (ANI)
