Smart Electricity Meters Transform India's Power Infrastructure

In a significant stride towards modernizing India's power infrastructure, Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, announced the installation of 3.46 crore smart electricity meters across the nation. These installations are part of various government initiatives, with 2.27 crore meters notably established under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.
The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, featuring a substantial financial commitment of Rs 3,03,758 crore, along with a government budgetary support of Rs 97,631 crore, aims to bolster the country's energy distribution capabilities significantly. By June 2025, the scheme plans to implement a total of 20.33 crore smart meters, an essential upgrade in India's electricity supply framework.
Addressing parallel developments, Minister Naik highlighted ongoing progress in India's pumped storage projects. Currently, 29 projects boasting a cumulative capacity of 48,700 MW are under survey and investigation, aiding detailed project report preparations. Furthermore, the Central Electricity Authority has approved 89 hydroelectric and 12 pumped storage project reports, underscoring the country's commitment to expanding its renewable energy resources.
