Yashin's Belgrade Rally: A European Vision for Ukraine
Russian opposition activist Ilya Yashin, in his first public speech in Serbia, urged Europe to view Ukraine as part of Europe. Addressing Russian expatriates in Belgrade, he stressed that the Ukrainian army defends Europe against Russian aggression. Yashin's visit highlights Serbia's complex ties with Russia amid EU aspirations.

Prominent Russian opposition activist Ilya Yashin has called for Europe to recognize Ukraine as a part of Europe, suggesting that the Ukrainian military acts as a European army. Speaking in Belgrade, Yashin emphasized Ukraine's defense of Europe against Russian aggression, in front of a gathering of Russian expats in Serbia.
Yashin, who was imprisoned in 2022 for opposing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, marked his first public appearance in Serbia since his release. His presence underscores the complex dynamics between Serbia and Russia, as Serbia harbors aspirations of joining the European Union while maintaining historical ties with Moscow.
Serbian-Russian relations have recently been strained, particularly following complaints from Russia's spy agency about Serbia's arms sales to Ukraine. The visit of Yashin, a vocal critic of Russia's policies, may further complicate these diplomatic ties as Serbia seeks to balance its relationships with both the West and Russia.
