Continuous torrential rains in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu and Mandi districts have severely disrupted normal life. Rivers bursting their banks have led to widespread unease, while landslides and waterlogging have shattered connectivity, particularly affecting the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway, which is now blocked by boulders and mud, stranding vehicles and commuters on both ends.
The Balh subdivision in Mandi district faces severe waterlogging, with rainwater flooding homes and shops, forcing residents to seek safer, higher ground. The devastation has left 309 roads, including the vital National Highway 305, impassable due to landslides. Moreover, 236 water supply schemes and 113 power transformers are out of commission, severely impeding essential services.
Mandi district has emerged as the epicenter of the calamity, reporting 23 rain-related and 14 traffic-related fatalities. The area also records the highest infrastructure damage, with 167 roads blocked, and includes the greatest disruptions to water and power services. Neighboring districts like Kangra, Kullu, Chamba, and Shimla have also reported significant casualties and devastating damages. Notably, National Highway-505 in Lahaul-Spiti is closed due to landslides, further isolating the region.
The State Disaster Management Authority's report highlights that damage to public assets, including roads, power lines, water supply, and health facilities, amounts to over Rs 1,71,495 lakh. The havoc has also ravaged agriculture, impacting over 88,800 hectares of vital crops.
