In a bold move, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy spearheaded a protest at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. The demonstration called for Presidential approval of bills enhancing reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) to 42% in education, employment, and local governance. The state legislature passed these bills in March, but they are stalled, awaiting assent at the central level, which many claim is an act of bias against OBCs.
The protest drew support from prominent political figures, including Supriya Sule, Kanimozhi, and others, rallying behind what Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi describes as an essential step towards social justice. Meanwhile, dissenting voices like BJP's Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticized the protest, labeling religious-based reservations as detrimental.
This contentious issue highlights ongoing struggles for representation and equality in Telangana and across India. The protest signifies a broader movement towards recognizing and addressing the needs of marginalized communities, with leaders emphasizing the need for unity and collective action in advancing the nation's constitutional visions of fairness.
