Tensions Rise as Sri Lankan Navy Arrests Indian Fishermen

In a recent development escalating tensions in maritime borders, the Sri Lankan Navy has detained 14 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district.

Four individuals, identified as Vimalraj (24), Mathesh (20), Sakthi (18), and Karthi (18), were apprehended near Thondi, Thiruppalai, while ten others were arrested from the Pamban area of Rameswaram.

The Sea Workers' Association State President, S. Muruganantham, confirmed the arrests, highlighting the growing unrest among the fishermen. The incident brings to light the recurring issues of maritime boundary disagreements impacting local fishing communities.

On previous occasions, such as the arrest of five fishermen on July 29, the ongoing struggles faced by these communities have come to the forefront. These fishermen were detained for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), causing further unrest in Rameswaram.

Political figures have voiced concerns regarding the situation. MP M Thambidurai stressed the need for urgent attention to the plight of Tamil Nadu fishermen and the urgency of upholding promises made by the Sri Lankan government.
