Amid heavy rains hitting the Uttarkashi district, all educational institutions, including government, non-government, and private schools from classes 1 to 12, as well as Anganwadi centres, will remain closed on Thursday. The Uttarkashi administration's decision comes in light of a weather forecast predicting more rain on August 7.
The India Meteorological Department's advisory issued on August 6, 2025, warns of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall with a red alert in some parts of the district on August 6, accompanied by thunderstorms and potential lightning spells on August 7. Rising water levels, cloudbursts, and landslides have prompted authorities to prioritize student safety.
A catastrophic cloudburst in Uttarkashi district has led to flash floods and landslides, damaging infrastructure in Dharali, Sukhi Top, and Harsil areas. The Indian Army has launched an urgent Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operation, employing over 225 personnel for rescue and relief. As structural damage hampers movements, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assures that relief measures remain a priority.
