In a move underscoring India's push for self-reliance in defense, the government has approved a project to acquire 97 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. The decision represents a major victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India initiative and enhances domestic defense manufacturing capabilities.
The latest approval marks the second major order for the LCA Mark 1A aircraft, following an earlier purchase agreement for 83 jets worth around Rs 48,000 crore. The acquisition is strategically timed to replace the aging MiG-21 fleet, which is set to be retired in the coming weeks, according to defense sources.
This development is not only a boost for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which will manufacture the jets, but also for the small and medium enterprises engaged in the country's defense sector. The initiative highlights India's growing independence in aerospace technology, with over 65% of the new LCAs comprised of indigenous content.
