Ukraine announced on Monday the charging of six individuals, involving a lawmaker and a government official, over embezzlement allegations in defense procurement deals. These deals were crucial for securing drones and jamming equipment necessary for the country's military efforts against Moscow's invasion.
According to anti-corruption authorities, the scheme included kickbacks for overpriced purchases, facilitated by a legislator and officials, including a National Guard commander and two businessmen. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau revealed that around 30% of contract values were illicitly pocketed during 2024-2025.
With President Volodymyr Zelenskiy supporting the anti-corruption measures, the crackdown also includes charges against a former governor and other military administration figures. The suspects, yet to be named, were part of a conspiracy to inflate a $240,000 drone contract by $80,000, all involving locally manufactured equipment.
